Getting Off the Floor

This is a common question our senior clientele asks us: How do I get up off the floor? While this is an important skill everyone needs to be able to do, this is especially true for those who live alone. Here, we provide a step-by-step guide with three variations, accompanied by photos and a video.

Step 1

You’ve found yourself on the ground. If you aren’t already, start by lying flat. This is the easiest position to start in.

Step 2

Extend one arm overhead and bend the opposite knee.

Step 3

Roll toward the extended arm until you’re lying entirely on your side, and the bent leg should be on top of your extended leg.

Step 4

Push up into a side-sitting position, with both legs bent and weight distributed to your arms.

This is where the variations come in. Option one requires a little upper-body strength.

Step 5a

Rotate from the side-sitting position to all four, knees and hands on the floor.

Step 6a

Using your hands, walk yourself up to standing.

The second variation requires more lower-body strength.

Step 5b

From your hands and knees, move into a lunge-like or half-kneeling position. Some may keep their hands on the floor, and for some, placing their hands on the knee may be preferable.

Step 6b

From there, using your leg strength, push up to a standing position.

The last variation is the easiest option, but only if you are near a piece of sturdy furniture.

Step 5c

If there is sturdy furniture nearby, a chair (not on wheels!) will do, place your hands on the furniture for support.

Step 6c

Use the furniture for support as you stand up!
